Garage management software had a problem: most of it was built decades ago, layered on top of legacy ERP systems, and never fundamentally rethought. The result was platforms that were slow, clunky, and frustrating to use — but so deeply embedded that garages kept using them out of habit rather than preference.
We saw a different path. Instead of adding features to an old foundation, we started from scratch — with modern architecture, a clean interface, and a deliberate focus on the day-to-day reality of running a workshop.

The person behind the platform
James Billington
Founder & Managing Director
James founded the company in 2013 with a focus on building software that solves real problems rather than repackaging existing ones. Over more than a decade of working with businesses on e-commerce, enterprise integrations, and digital platforms, a recurring pattern emerged: the automotive sector was being underserved by software that had not fundamentally evolved.
BOOKAR is the product of that observation — built from scratch, with no legacy constraints, and designed around the actual workflows of a modern workshop. James leads the platform's development and direction, bringing together deep technical knowledge and direct insight into what garage owners need from their software.
A recognised voice in digital commerce, James was invited to speak at Magento Live UK in London — sharing insights on B2B strategy and platform architecture with industry leaders from across Europe.
